Pilotage in the coastal districts

In addition to its main districts, the Lotsenbrüderschaft NOK II Kiel / Lübeck / Flensburg serves further districts along Schleswig-Holstein’s Baltic coast.

When required, pilots advise bridge teams in the Schlei and Kappeln, Eckernförde, Heiligenhafen, Burgstaaken and Neustadt in Holstein districts. Their approaches, fairways and port areas place differing demands on passage planning and local knowledge.

The applicable regulations, notices and nautical publications are authoritative.

District overview

Schlei & Kappeln

The approach leads via Schleimünde into the Schlei and onwards to Kappeln. The district is characterised by a comparatively narrow fairway, varying water depths, currents and heavy recreational traffic.

Kappeln bascule bridge and the local port areas require coordinated passage planning.

Eckernförde

The district includes Eckernförde Bay, the Port of Eckernförde and Kranzfelder Harbour. Warning and restricted areas, as well as military areas, must be taken into account during the approach.

There is no general compulsory pilotage requirement; pilotage is provided on request.

Heiligenhafen

The approach follows the Kiel–Fehmarn Sound route to the commercial and municipal harbour. The fairway, possible currents and seasonally heavy recreational traffic place particular demands on the passage.

Special navigation requirements and compulsory pilotage apply to exceptionally large vessels.

Burgstaaken

The Port of Burgstaaken is reached via the Burger See. Depending on draught and dimensions, the approach may be made through Fehmarn Sound or via the Fehmarn Belt.

The unlit fairway and limited port dimensions require careful planning. There is no general compulsory pilotage requirement.

Neustadt in Holstein

The district includes the approach, outer harbour and the civilian, military and government-used port areas of Neustadt in Holstein.

The different areas of use, limited water depths and local port structure require clear coordination with the competent authorities.
